Customer Review: mediocre shogi set
This is an OK shogi set, but nothing spectacular. The board is quite nice, though mine has a couple of small dents in it, and the wood is a bit darker than I would like. The pieces are not that great; several of them have the wood grain changing from light to dark in the middle of the piece, which is very off-putting. Also, the calligraphy is quite uneven — most pieces are fine, but on some pieces the writing is too thick while on others it’s too thin. Most importantly, the board is very small and would not be pleasant for actually playing a game. It’s fine for playing over recorded games, which is what I’m going to use it for.

Customer Review: Best chess book I’ve ever read.
This is an excellent and enjoyable chess primer that will both initiate the beginning player and even teach a lot to someone like myself who has been playing for a long time. The pictures are beautiful, the lessons are clear and instructive and the chapters on the game’s history and culture are fascinating. I for one, after 27 years of playing, finally learned chess notation from this book. This book introduces the novice to the notation system in an intelligent way by incorporating_visual_representations of the chess pieces along with standard notation. For example, it will list the first few moves of a game with the notation symbols and then_show_a picture of where all the pieces would then be positioned on the board. I found that kind of mixed approach a compassionate method of immersing the beginner into the intimidating alphanumeric language of chess. I also never truly understood the various strategies of the game until I read this book. Of course, I’d heard the names “Sicilian Defense” or “Ruy Lopez”, and have surely played those strategies without knowing what they were called, but this book gave me a solid education in the nomenclature of the strategic options and an overview of the logic behind them. Overall, this book should be in the library of every amateur chess player.

For the price this was okay but I really reccomend Majestic Chess. It was one of the most fun games I have ever played because of it’s great adventure mode that makes chess much more fun. Championship Chess was just an average chess game to play against a computer and was no different than any other chess game I have ever played.

Customer Review: A switch from the ordinary
This is an excellent board game for someone starting to learn about Chinese Chess. I find it very hard to imagine why this game isnt more popular in America. The board is sturdy and the chess pieces are beautifully crafted (warning- they have only Chinese characters on them). However, for those who are learning about the game, buy a book on Xiangqi because instructions are scarce. Also, find someone willing to learn with you. Then we can have two kinds of chess on American soil.
Customer Review: Good quality set at good price
When I traveled to Hong Kong I bought myself two xiangqi sets, one at a hardware store for about $1US and one from the Ladies’ Market in Kowloon for about $6US hich is exactly like this one. I’m very happy with the quality of the board and pieces. The board is veneer but is nicely made and holds the pieces very snugly with a magnetic latch. The quality of the pieces is very good in terms of size, weight, quality of the characters and paint job. These heavy plastic pieces are much nicer in quality than the wooden pieces I’ve seen in several similarly priced sets. It may seem outrageous to pay $30 for something I bought for $6 but that is about the best price you can get online for a similar quality board and pieces shipped to the US. Cheaper sets tend to have much cheaper quality boards with similar or worse quality pieces. As such I find this board from YMI to be a good value.
